Exodus 13 — Sketch

Led by Fire

Big Idea:

  • God has Moses tell the Israelites to remember the day of their freedom by observing the Passover celebration — For seven days they are to eat bread without yeast, and on the seventh day they are to hold a festival.

  • They are to tell their sons, “I do this because of what the lord did for me when I came out of Egypt” and “With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.”

  • They are also to sacrifice the firstborn of their livestock to God.

  • God leads Israel as a pillar of cloud by day and as a pillar of fire by night — never leaving His place in front of His people.

  • Armed for battle, the Israelites follow God toward the Red Sea.

Jesus in This Chapter:

  • Often in the bible, yeast is symbolic for sin. The Israelites were to remember the Passover with yeast-less bread as a symbol of Jesus’ sinless body.

  • God leading Israel as a pillar of cloud and fire reminds me of John 14:5-7. The disciples ask Jesus to show them the way. Jesus answer: “I am the way.” We are to follow Jesus just as the Israelites followed the pillar.
