Exodus 13 — Sketch
Led by Fire
Big Idea:
God has Moses tell the Israelites to remember the day of their freedom by observing the Passover celebration — For seven days they are to eat bread without yeast, and on the seventh day they are to hold a festival.
They are to tell their sons, “I do this because of what the lord did for me when I came out of Egypt” and “With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.”
They are also to sacrifice the firstborn of their livestock to God.
God leads Israel as a pillar of cloud by day and as a pillar of fire by night — never leaving His place in front of His people.
Armed for battle, the Israelites follow God toward the Red Sea.
Jesus in This Chapter:
Often in the bible, yeast is symbolic for sin. The Israelites were to remember the Passover with yeast-less bread as a symbol of Jesus’ sinless body.
God leading Israel as a pillar of cloud and fire reminds me of John 14:5-7. The disciples ask Jesus to show them the way. Jesus answer: “I am the way.” We are to follow Jesus just as the Israelites followed the pillar.
