Exodus 17 — Sketch
With a Little Help from My Friends
Big idea:
After traveling, Israel comes to Rephidim, but there’s no water to drink. Israel complains to Moses.
God tells Moses to meet Him at the rock at Horeb, where Moses is to strike the rock with his staff.
Moses does so, and water springs from the rock.
Later, the Amalekites attack Israel.
As Joshua leads Israel in fighting the Amalekites, Moses, Aaron, and Hur go to the top of a hill.
As long as Moses keeps his arms raised, Israel wins the battle. But when he lowers them, Israel starts to lose.
Aaron and Hur help him keep his arms up, and Israel defeats the Amalekites.
Moses builds an altar to God called “The Lord is my Banner.”
Jesus in This Chapter:
Just as water burst out of the rock, Jesus is the spring of living water bursting through our hard hearts.
Moses raised his arms in the same way that Jesus’ arms were spread on the cross. And just as Israel had victory over the Amalekites when Moses’ arms were raised, we have victory over sin and death when we keep our faith in Jesus and His work on the cross.
