Exodus 5 — Sketch

The Unwelcome Prophet

Big Idea:

  • Moses and Aaron go before Pharaoh and tell him to let the Israelites visit the wilderness to make sacrifices to God.

  • Pharaoh refuses.

  • Moses and Aaron insist.

  • Pharaoh gets angry.

  • Out of spite, Pharaoh makes the slaves’ work even more difficult. He stops supplying them with straw for making bricks but requires them to make the same amount of bricks anyway.

  • The Israelite foremen go before Pharaoh to make an appeal. Pharaoh blames Moses.

  • Leaving Pharaoh, the foremen find Moses and Aaron to complain about how they’ve made things worse for Israel.

  • Overwhelmed, Moses asks God why things are going so badly.

Jesus in This Chapter:

God knew Israel would complain here. He knew they would complain in the wilderness, and He knew they would stray from Him once they reached the Promised Land. But we’re going to see God free Israel anyway. In the same way, Jesus’ work on the cross frees us from sin and death — and it also atones for all the struggling and fighting against God we’re going to do along the way. So, no matter how childishly we respond to the difficulty of walking with God, we still know that He loves us — because of Jesus.
