Genesis 44 — Sketch

I Volunteer as Tribute

Big Idea:

• Joseph sends the brothers back to Jacob with food. Again, he hides the money they used to pay for the food in their bags — only this time, he puts his silver cup into Benjamin’s bag.

• Joseph sends men after the brothers to catch up to them and accuse them of stealing the cup.

• The brothers tell Joseph’s men that whoever has the cup will be killed, but Joseph’s men say that the guilty person will only become Joseph’s slave.

• The men find the cup in Benjamin’s sack, and everyone is taken back to Joseph's house in Egypt, where Joseph demands an explanation.

• For Jacob’s sake, Judah begs to be kept as a slave in Benjamin’s place

Jesus in This Chapter:

Judah offers himself as a substitute in Benjamin’s place. Jesus offered Himself as a substitute in our place, taking the punishment for our sin.
